On Saturday morning, the Gundagai community came together on a beautiful day, to commemorate ANZAC Day with a procession down Sheridan Street and a service at the Cenotaph, after the dawn service in the morning held at ANZAC Grove.
There was a great turn out of people to pay their respects at both services.
Led in prayer by Father Joe, the service also featured speeches from Gundagai High School Captains Angus Donald and Samantha Crooks, as well as Mayor Abb McAlister and Steph Cooke.
Abb McAlister said both ceremonies were thoroughly supported by the community and were well organised.
“The dawn service and the parade are always great ceremonies, and this year was no exception,” Abb said.
“Once again, the dawn service was extremely well attended, and ANZAC Grove looked beautiful. The parade was the same; it was a big crowd. We are so lucky to have the 7th Light Horse and the Federation Guard; it was just a great day.
“There was a great turnout from the schools too. The teachers did a great job to get the students there, as well as all other organisations, we just couldn’t ask for a better day.
“The Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch and everyone from that organisation do a fantastic job of having everything organised too.
“There were also very good crowds at the Hotel and the Clubs after for the Two-Up, was very good crowds.”
The Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch said the event was well supported by the community.

“The turnout was commendable. We thank Father Joe, Mayor Abb McAlister, Gundagai High School Captains and Steph Cooke for taking part in the commemoration,” said Abb.
Steph Cooke was in attendance and said it was a privilege to attend the main service in person.
“Once again the community turned out in very large numbers to mark ANZAC Day in Gundagai. The 7th Light Horse Gundagai Troop added such a special and deeply meaningful presence, honouring a proud local connection to our wartime history,” said Steph.
“A particular highlight was the special address delivered by the school captains of Gundagai High School. It was thoughtful, respectful and a wonderful reminder that the ANZAC story continues to be carried forward by the next generation.”
“The laying of wreaths and floral tributes by so many members of the community was also very moving. Each tribute represents remembrance, gratitude and respect for those who served, those who sacrificed, and those who never came home.”
