On January 26, 2026, Gundagai residents gathered at Carberry Park for the annual Australia Day ceremony, hosted by the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council.
The event started at 8:30 am, with free entertainment, breakfast from the Gundagai Lions Club, and a welcoming community vibe.
Highlights included:
• Live music from local band The Gundaguys, plus a special National Anthem performance by young talent Riley Lott.
• A citizenship ceremony welcoming 5 new Australian citizens.
• An inspiring address and meet-and-greet with Australia Day Ambassador Corey Payne, a former NRL player dedicated to youth education and community impact.
The morning concluded with the 2026 Australia Day Awards, presented by Mayor Abb McAlister and Ambassador Corey Payne, honouring outstanding local contributions.
Award Recipients:
• Citizen of the Year: Wendy Anderson (pictured)
Reverend Wendy Anderson, the Anglican minister for Gundagai’s St John’s Parish, was recognised for her tireless community care and service beyond her church role.
• Young Citizen of the Year: Zak Anderson
Zak was honoured for his positive impact and contributions as a young community member.
• Sportsperson of the Year: William Edwards
William received the award for his sporting achievements and dedication. Certificates of Acknowledgement were also presented to Gundagai Council in Exile and Paul Vercoe from the Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch for their community service.
The ceremony wrapped up around 11 am, allowing everyone to enjoy the park, share stories, and celebrate the local heroes who strengthen Gundagai. It was a heartfelt morning of reflection, respect, and pride in the community’s spirit.
