Travellers to and through Gundagai will be met with the warmest of welcomes following a major upgrade of the town’s visitor information centre and surrounding amenities. The redevelopment of the visitor centre was supported by the former NSW Coalition Government through both the design and construction phases, with $150,250 from round five of the Stronger Country Communities Fund and $300,000 from round one of the Stronger Communities Fund.
Additionally, the Coalition provided $483,526 from round five of the Stronger Country Communities Fund and $35,000 from the Lift and Change Program to redevelop the Carberry Park amenities block. This work includes new male and female toilets, an ambulant toilet, and an adult lift and change facility, delivering improved accessibility for people with complex disabilities.
Over the past decade, the former NSW Coalition Government has supported CGRC’s total transformation of Carberry Park, funding the construction of an adventure playground, picnic area and landscaping.
Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, joined Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) and local residents to officially open the latest facilities.
“Gundagai is a tourism gem perfectly positioned along the Hume Highway,” Ms Cooke said.
“When visitors come to town, they’ll be greeted by a fabulous new visitor centre, complete with modern and accessible amenities that ensure everyone feels welcome as they begin to explore this historic country town.
“This project is a direct investment in our region’s tourism economy, supporting numerous cafes, restaurants, hotels, museums, galleries and agritourism businesses.”
The Information Centre now features a larger retail space highlighting local produce and wines, along with interactive exhibits that showcase Gundagai’s attractions and experiences.
The grand opening was followed by the town’s annual ‘Christmas on Sheridan’ street party, which was recently awarded $350,000 from the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program 2025–2028.
This year’s festivities included market stalls, Christmas crafts, live entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus.
“Christmas on Sheridan is a fabulous event that never fails to bring the whole community together,” Ms Cooke said.
“It’s such a delight to see families out and about, supporting our local vendors and enjoying one of the many wonderful events our region offers at this time of year.
