The Gundagai Public School 2025 Maths Olympiad Team has had an extremely successful year, with nine of their students placing in the top 10 percent across all Australasia for the program.
Gundagai Public School Principal Jesse Wheaton said this year has been an exceptional one for the 2025 Maths Olympiad Team.
“We are incredibly proud of our 2025 Maths Olympiad team, who have had an outstanding year of lateral thinking and problem solving. Across Terms 2 and 3, students completed four contest papers, tackling challenging questions that stretched their mathematical thinking and encouraged creative approaches to problem solving.”
“We’re thrilled to share that nine of our students placed in the Top 10% across all of Australasia. This is an outstanding accomplishment and reflects their hard work, commitment and willingness to take on a complex mathematical challenge,” said Jesse.
“As a team, we were also recognised for outstanding achievement and received a commemorative plaque for finishing in the Top 10% of all schools competing — an exceptional achievement that highlights not only individual success but the collective strength and effort of the group.”
“In addition to our Olympiad Team, we also had a large group of Stage 2 students participate in the Maths Explorer program, which serves as a fantastic introduction to the Olympiad. It is designed as an introduction to Olympiad-style thinking and provides younger students with a valuable opportunity to build confidence in problem solving.”
“Between the Maths Olympiad and the Maths Explorer program, more than 150,000 students across Australasia participated in 2025, which is an extraordinary level of involvement that further emphasises the significance of our students’ achievements,” said Jesse.
“Well done to all who took part and the staff who supported the program throughout this year.”
The Maths Olympiad programis an inter-school competition that has been designed to stimulate and challenge high potential and high achieving students in Years 5 and 6. It provides an opportunity for students from around Australia and New Zealand to compete as part of a team while striving for individual excellence.
It is a prestigious and highly regarded competition that has been running in Australia since 1987. It also aims to promote and improve maths problem solving skills among all students in primary and secondary schools across Australia and New Zealand; support teachers in developing their students to understand a variety of strategies to promote flexibility in their problem solving; encourage creativity and collaboration in problem solving; and stimulate enthusiasm for and enjoyment of mathematics.
