Next weekend, a world record attempt will take place at Gundagai Showgrounds, where up to 200 Land Rovers will travel in convoy over the greatest distance, as part of the 77th Land Rover Gathering.
Next weekend, hundreds of Land Rover enthusiasts from across Australia will flock to the Gundagai Showgrounds to celebrate 77 years of the Land Rover, 45 years of the Camel Tophy and 55 years of the Range Rover, and a World Record attempt will take place, which the team from LR Events hopes will put Gundagai on the global stage.
Presented by the Defenders of Australia Club (DOAC), a World Record attempt will take place for the ‘largest number of Land Rovers in convoy over the greatest distance’. Matt Hubbert, President of the Defenders of Australia Club (DOAC), says the attempt is something that is a bit of fun for Land Rovers.
“We’ve got as many Land Rovers as we can to roll out on Friday morning. “At the moment, we’ve got 142 registered. The route is about 39km, and the idea is to set a world record by having the most amount of Land Rovers over the longest distance.”
“It is a bit of fun for Land Rovers, and we’ve got everything from Series Land Rovers right through to brand new Defenders registered, so right across the ball of 77 years of Land Rover his-tory will be in the convoy,” Matt said.
“We are just looking for somewhere local to raise money for as we are in the community and it’s what we like to do, and the school are pretty excited,” Matt said.
The funds will be presented later to the school at an assembly.
The main gathering for the 77th Land Rover Gathering is from Friday, 26th September – Sunday, 28th September, with access to the Showgrounds and camping from Monday, 22nd September.
This major national event which is expected to attract many visitors to town, will also include a range of events and activities across the weekend such as mystery drives through the scenic Gundagai region, Land Rover displays, a Quiz night, an off-road skills challenge course, a ‘Winch and Recovery demonstration’ featuring Camel Tophy winners, live music, a BBQ, a Swap Meet for Land Rover parts, a Landy Doggy show and a Show and Shine competition.
Also happening next weekend is the official opening of the Landcruiser Foundation Museum in the Gundagai Theatre, which will have a display of Toyota Landcruisers from 1951 to the present day and other historic cars, which will be open across the whole weekend.
