Students from years 3 and 4 from Gundagai Public School, Gundagai South Public School and St Patrick’s Primary School participated in the Trent Barrett Shield Gala Day at Twickenham Oval in Tumut on August 14.
The competition consists of students from primary schools throughout the region competing against each other in league tag and rugby league.
Other schools in attendance were McAuley Tumut, Tumbarumba Public School, St Joseph’s Adelong, Tumut Public School and Franklin Public School.
Gundagai South Public School Principal Pip McAlister said the school had three teams participate.“We had three teams take part in the day, combining with Jugiong Public School and Adelong Public School, girls’ league tag, experienced and inexperienced. All teams played so well, showed true grit, determination and sportsmanship. We are so proud of you all.”
“Thanks to all the family members who helped Miss Young, Michelle and Chris with the teams, we appreciate you,” Pip said.
Gundagai Public School had 30 students participate in the day, and they all had a great time.
Jesse Wheaton from Gundagai Public School said, “What an awesome day it was! Our teams played with great enthusiasm, showing wonderful teamwork and sportsmanship. For some students, it was their very first time trying rugby league or league tag – and they loved it!”
“A huge well done to all our players for giving it their best and making the most of this fantastic experience. What a great day,” Jesse said.
Christine Baron from St Patrick’s Primary School said the students had a great day. “What a ripper day it turned out to be for our Year 3 and Year 4 children who had a great day in Tumut for the annual Trent Barrett Gala Day.”
