Land Rover is celebrating its 77th anniversary in Gundagai this September, with a full weekend of events for everyone at Gundagai Showgrounds.
Get ready for an unforgettable weekend celebrating all things Land Rover at the 77th Land Rover Gathering in Gundagai. Taking place from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th September 2025, the event will offer something for everyone including the Show & Shine, where beautifully restored and modified Land Rovers will be on display, the Landy Doggy Show, a fun competition for both owners and their four-legged companions and the Defenders Club of Australia world record attempt convoy.
The event will also feature mystery drives through the scenic Gundagai region, an off-road course for those looking to put their vehicles to the test, and an RC competition, where remote-controlled Land Rovers tackle challenging terrain. In addition, there will be a classic car and truck showcase, trade stands with Land Rover gear and accessories, and plenty of food and entertainment, including a BBQ and live music.
One of the highlights of the event will be the Defenders of Australia Club World Record Attempt – Land Rover Convoy, bringing together Land Rover enthusiasts for a record-breaking drive, where they need a minimum of 100 vehicles to break the record.
2025 is not only 77 years of the Land Rover, but it is also 45 years of the Camel Trophy and 55 years of the Range Rover.
Justin from the team at LR Classics Events says the team couldn’t wait another 5 years to put on another celebration, after the success of the 70th and 75th events held in Cooma. “We couldn’t wait to do a big event for the 80th, so we decided to a do mid-point event for the 77th anniversary.”
“We were starting to think about where we could run our event before the 80th celebration, and a member of our committee suggested Gundagai because it is the place where the first Land Rover Club held their meeting,” Justin said.
Gundagai was the location where the first ever Land Rover Club meeting took place between the NSW and VIC clubs back in 1964. Gundagai was a halfway point between both clubs, where they continued to meet for another 20 years.
“With Gundagai there are links from those meetings in the 60s when Clubs got together and had their first meeting, so there is a lot of history with Gundagai,” Justin said.
“We were blown away by how good the facilities in Gundagai were when we met with Council last year, so what we decided was to put on an event which marks the midway point between 75 and 80th. If this is successful, we may consider doing an 80th in Gundagai,” Justin said.
“A lot of the negativity we received from the 70th anniversary event will be positive because of the Gundagai facilities and what they offer.”
“We are also trying to broaden the event, and we have invited Grenadier 4WDs, some horse events, the Army – we are just trying to spread it out a bit and not make it Land Rover specific, because this is our first event in Gundagai and we want to get people through the door.”
“To give you some perspective, for the 70th anniversary in Cooma, we had 4,500 in the town that weekend and generated about $2.5 million. The 75th was a bit smaller, but we still had 800 Land Rovers in attendance,” Justin said. “We’ve also got this Convoy, which is a world record attempt which will kind of put Gundagai on the map,” Justin said. “The location is stunning; there is so much space down there. We just need it to be successful, because if it is, and we decide to do an 80th, that is a big anniversary for Land Rover and if it can be held in Gundagai that would be great, as it is still in the Snowy Hydro region, which is close to Cooma,” Justin said.
“The weekend is not just about Land Rovers. It is open to anyone, with walk ins available on Saturdays and Sundays. We are trying to make it more diverse, such as mystery drives out to vineyards and breweries, as well as many other things,” Justin said.
