Gundagai Can Assist Receive Huge Donation

Nathan Stelter, Anne Tickner and Phil Smith.

Gundagai’s Criterion Hotel supports local charities and organisations through their Jag the Joker raffle with recent recipients being Can Assist Gundagai who received a donation of $5000. On top of that their Australia Day Yabby races raised $1500 with Can Assist being the charity of choice. This makes over $25,000 for the local community.

President of Can Assist Gundagai said, “the Jag the Joker is run independently by the Criterion Hotel and then they give the money to a charity. Gundagai Can Assist was chosen this time as the recipient of the funds.

“The money will go towards financial support for patients having cancer treatment within the Gundagai region. That will go to off-setting their travel costs for treatment and also the accommodation costs, some people do and some people don’t stay in Wagga and/or travel off to other locations and have to stay for weeks at a time and also the money will be given to them for some of the medications they need for their cancer treatment.

“The amount of money that the Criterion gave us will go a long way into helping a lot of people and will make it so much easier as it takes so much pressure off the funds and to be available to help people.

“It takes a lot of pressure off the committee and knowing that we have the town behind us and having that amount of money is a massive amount of assistance for us to be able to give people.

“I just can’t get over how generous this community is towards our charity. It’s overwhelming. I’m getting contacted periodically, sometimes its regularly, sometimes it might be a bit of a gap, but we have such a caring community thinks about cancer patients and they know that all our money stays local within the community.

“That is the greatest selling point is people know that when they are giving money to Can Assist, it is staying within the town and nothing is going off to admin or anywhere else. All the money is staying in the Gundagai town area to help the Gundagai people.

“I just can’t get over the amount of organisations in this community that often ring up and say Phil, we have a donation to give your organisation because you help someone within our community or a friend or whoever.

“I often say to our committee that we have such a generous community here. I know some other Can Assist branches that are continually going out cooking barbecues, and all these fundraisers, which is great, but our community is so great and knowing how we handle and look after the money they raise that they continually give us funds towards the charity.

“I’d just like to thank the Criterion Hotel and Jag The Joker and everyone in the community for being so kind and generous and thinking about our charity and I know there’s a couple of people who work behind the scenes who don’t want any recognition.”

Gundagai South Public School has been selected as the beneficiary of the Hotels’ current raffle.
