The Gundagai District History Group is gearing up for another major History Week, promising one of its biggest programs yet when the annual celebration of local heritage kicks off next month.
The event begins on Saturday, 6 September, with a special guided tour of the Gundagai Railway
Precinct. Organisers say the tour will give participants a close-up look at one of the town’s most significant historic sites, shedding light on the role the railway played in Gundagai’s development and the stories of the people connected to it.
“History Week is shaping up to be another big one this year,” the Gundagai District History Group said. “We’re bringing out another huge program and we’re excited to share it with the community.”
While full details of the wider program are still being finalised, the group has indicated a strong line-up of talks, displays, walks and other activities designed to explore Gundagai’s rich past. The opening tour of the railway precinct is expected to set the tone for a week that highlights the district’s transport heritage alongside its broader social and community history.
Gundagai has long drawn interest for its layered history — from early settlement and the legendary dog on the tuckerbox through to its railway era and enduring local stories. History Week has become an important fixture for residents and visitors keen to dig deeper into that past.
