Community groups cannot survive without support, and for the year 2026, Gundagai Can Assist is looking for more support in the form of volunteers as they begin work for the year.
The President of Gundagai Can Assist said that there aren’t many major events planned just yet, but people should be on the lookout for upcoming events.
“Nothing big planned, but we’ve got our annual golf day organised by the Gundagai Golf Club, which is a charity golf day coming up in March. They organise all that for us in the background,” he said.
“We have got a street stall coming up in about April. Other than that, we don’t have anything else organised at this stage for the year.
“We don’t have any large plans other than to do our fundraising and help assist patients with their costs.
“We are always on the lookout for volunteers, but volunteers volunteer in different ways. We have a lot of community-minded people who want to go out and fundraise for us and do not want to be in the limelight. We’ve got a very good community out there that knows the reason why Can Assist is set up, and they reckon it’s a great charity, because all the money stays local, and that’s a great thing, and a lot of people don’t want recognition.
“That’s the funny thing about it, because the money stays, raised locally, stays locally, to help locals. They’re all in it, like every now and again, I will get a knock on the door from somebody to say, look, you know, here’s $50 I’ve raised, or here’s $500 I’ve raised from doing this or that. Everyone wants to get behind us.
“We have got a great crew. We’ve got a couple of people on the committee who then say, okay, we’re going to do this, and they’ll go out and organise.
“Every time someone wants to raise money, I’ll make sure they go through the process of notifying the head office in Sydney that it is a genuine fundraiser for the local branch.
“The golf day is organised by the Golf Club, and they have a bowls day as well, which is all organised by a subcommittee from those organisations, the bowls and the golf club.
“I can’t get over how many people out in the community want to help and give funds to us.
“They will do a fundraiser so the local rodeo club and the local footy club, the schools, I’m always getting phone calls, but it’s the whole community who helps and gets the ball rolling.”
