The 77th Land Rover Anniversary Gathering in Gundagai brought hundreds to the Showgrounds over the weekend.
Over the weekend, Gundagai hosted the 77th Land Rover Anniversary Gathering at the Showgrounds. The weekend was jam-packed with events and fun for Land Rover enthusiasts and those who wanted to enjoy a fun family day out.
Trudi Hill, President of LR Classic Events, says the weekend was a phenomenal success. “We made the world record for the most amount of Land Rovers in the longest line, travelling the longest distance. We had 174 Land Rovers in the convoy, so we made the world record.
“We had a lot of walk-ins on Saturday, a lot of locals that were driving through. Saturday was the biggest day, as Friday was a lot to do with the convoy, and we had the Tumut River Brewery and food vans there too,” Trudi said.
“On Saturday, we had the Camel Trophy guys rolling over a Holden Captiva and showing people how to do winching recoveries.
“The Motor Khana off-road trials were also on Saturday, which I think everyone had a go at. We were going up and down creek beds, and it was a timed trial. There were also a lot of exhibitors on the oval, as well as cars on display and ride-on remote control cars for kids to play on. There were probably an extra 200-300 people that came through the gate for the day on the Saturday,” Trudi said.
“After our Show and Shine and Doggy Show on Sunday, everyone made their way out the gate.
“The feedback has been great; everyone had a great weekend. Land Rover people just want to be together – so that’s why we do it,” Trudi said.
Land Rover enthusiasts travelled from all over the world to attend the event, with the furthest attendee coming from New Zealand.
“We had some people come from WA, including a guy in an old Series 3, who is now making his way overseas with the car, and another couple from WA. They do come from all over,” Trudi said.
Highlights of the weekend included the convoy and the off-road trials. “A lot of people came just for the convoy, spent the day there on Friday and then headed off. But 80% of people were there for the whole weekend.
“We had a massive BBQ on Saturday night, with about 200 people who attended. There was a bit of a wait for food, but we had some guest speakers and that was a highlight.
“We built a bar out of the side of a car, so we made a bar for everyone to stand and sit at out of a car, and it was cool.
“Saturday with everyone on the oval together was probably a main highlight,” Trudi said.
The LR Classics Event committee would like to thank everyone who attended or supported the event. “We would really love to thank all the locals; we had great support from all the local businesses and the council. The showgrounds there are an amazing venue – we’d love to come back and look at doing something there in the future. There is heaps of space down there, and everyone loved it.
“The local SES were also fantastic to come on board and help us with our event on Sunday. But otherwise, it is a great town with heaps for everyone to do, and everyone had a great time,” Trudi said.
