Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch has been awarded $150,000 through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants program for the construction of the Richard Norden VC memorial in Carberry Park.
Several RSL NSW Sub-Branches, including Gundagai, are among the latest recipients of federal funding through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program, ensuring that the stories of Australian Veterans continue to be honoured and preserved for future generations.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh announced that 77 community groups, schools, local governments and ex-service organisations across the country will share in more than $1.41 million as part of the 2024-25 round of the program.
Since its inception in 1996, the STS program has supported hundreds of commemorative projects nationwide, ranging from the restoration of cenotaphs and plaques to public art, books and digital stories. These projects serve as lasting reminders of service and sacrifice, while also engaging communities and helping new generations connect with Australia’s military history.
Among this year’s major grants is $150,000 awarded to the Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch for the construction of a new memorial in Carberry Park. This significant project will commemorate the Battle of Coral/Balmoral, the largest and longest battle fought by Australians during the Vietnam War, and pay tribute to Gundagai’s own Victoria Cross recipient, Private Richard Norden VC.
The memorial will feature informative displays and a bronze statue depicting Norden’s remarkable act of bravery during the fierce engagements at Fire Support Base Coral in May 1968. It will be the first dedicated memorial in Australia to acknowledge both the battle and Norden’s actions.
Securing the grant was the result of months of detailed work by a dedicated team led by Gundagai RSL sub-Branch Secretary, Paul Vercoe. Gundagai also drew on support available through RSL NSW, including expert advice from grants specialist Keith Whelan, who recently delivered a webinar to members on improving funding applications. Paul’s diligence, combined with this guidance, helped strengthen the case for the Gundagai memorial and secure significant federal funding.
“We are thrilled to receive this funding through the Saluting Their Service program,” Mr Vercoe said. “For the Gundagai RSL sub-Branch, this grant means we can turn our vision and plan into reality and create a memorial that truly honours the bravery of Private Richard Norden VC and all who served in the Battle of Coral/Balmoral.”
“From the beginning, this project has been a collective effort with strong support from our community, council, Federal Member, fellow sub-Branches and veteran groups. This grant is a major boost and ensures that Gundagai will have a memorial worthy of the courage it represents,” Mr Vercoe concluded.
The Memorial Opening Ceremony will take place on 14 May 2026.
