Private Richard Norden, one of Gundagai’s own, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia, recognising his extraordinary bravery during the Battle of Coral/Balmoral in Rockhampton recently. The VC was presented to his Widow, Robynn Freeman.
More than 50 years after his bravery in Vietnam, Private Richard Norden has finally received the nation’s highest military honour – the Victoria Cross.
At just 19, he risked his life to save his mates in the fierce Battle of Coral-Balmoral. Private Norden VC’s actions were galliant and courageous in the face of extreme circumstances. Last week, his widow Robynn and family, who have called Rockhampton home for many years, accepted the medal on his behalf in a moving investiture ceremony held in Rockhampton.
The Gundagai RSL Sub-Branch worked closely with the Governor General of Australia to help ensure this important day took place. This historic occasion was attended by dignitaries, veterans, and members of the Norden family, and marked a moment of immense pride for the Gundagai community. Australian Governor General Sam Mostyn presided over the investiture ceremony, presenting the insignia of the Victoria Cross for Australia to his widow Robynn, and sons Shane and Scott.
“It was an honour to present the Victoria Cross in Rockhampton – chosen at the request of the family to celebrate Richard’s life and honour his valour. In her adopted hometown, Robynn was joined by her husband Lance Freeman, sons Shane, Scott and Ben; many Defence veterans and ACT policing colleagues for a poignant and very moving ceremony.”

“When Private Norden’s platoon was ambushed and shot, he ran directly into the line of fire to retrieve members of his section who were severely injured or killed in the sudden attack.
“Private Norden’s courage in the face of imminent danger meant the enemy position could be secured, and the lives of other members of the platoon were spared. His memory and legacy lives on.”The Governor-General was also joined in honouring Private Richard Norden VC by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles; the Hon Michael McCormack MP, representing the Leader of the Opposition; Chief of the Defence Force Admiral David Johnston RAN; Donna Kirkland MP, representing the Premier of Queensland; the Hon Matt Canavan, Senator for Queensland; Michelle Landry, Member for Capricornia; Matt Anderson, Director Australian War Memorial; Scott Lee, AFP Deputy Commissioner, Keith Payne VC AM as well as family and friends at the Rockhampton Leagues Club.
