Tom French and Wayne Carthew. Men’s Major Singles Final 31st May
In an epic battle on Saturday, May 31, the top two men in the Men’s Major Singles fought it out for Championship supremacy. The Men’s Champion for 2025 is Wayne Carthew, with a complete and relentless performance in his 12-shot victory (25 – 13) over Tom French.
Despite the overall score, both men treated spectators and fellow players on the day to an absolute masterclass in what the game of Lawn Bowls is all about, some of the heads were packed that tight, that on a number of occasions, there were 6 or more bowls within a radius of 8 inches from the jack.
Wayne signalled his intentions early jumping to a 7-nil lead after 5 ends. Tom was on the board on the 6th with 3 shots, but a compilation of 5 shots over the next 2 ends saw Wayne move to 12, 9 shots clear of his opponent.
Tom settled into his groove with 2 added on the 9th and the maximum 4 shots on the 10th to sit just 3 shots behind Wayne (12 – 9).
By the 12th end, Wayne increased his lead to 6 shots (15 – 9) with 3 added while Tom moved to 11 with two singles by the 14th end. 2 shots to Wayne on the 15th and two singles over the next 2 ends to Tom made the difference between the two men 4 shots (17 – 13).
As mentioned earlier Wayne’s relentless drawing and shot-making kept Tom from getting any real foothold on the match. From ends 18 to 22 he went unopposed scoring 8 shots to reach 25 on the scoreboard and become the Men’s Singles Champion for 2025.
