Gundagai South Public School participating in the march.The sun was shining, and it was a beautiful day as the Gundagai community commemorated ANZAC Day 2025 and the 110th Anniversary of the landing at ANZAC Cove on Friday in Gundagai.
The parade began at 10.30am, with people marching from all different groups and organisations from the community including RSL members, local and surrounding schools, the CWA, the SES, Gundagai Police force, NSW Fire and Rescue, Gundagai Preschool and many other invited organisations marching down Sheridan Street, led by the 7th Light Horse Gundagai Troop and the Federation Guard from Canberra, and ending at the Cenotaph.
A wreath laying ceremony then took place, which paid tribute to Gundagai Vietnam War Veteran Richard Norden who was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal last year for his bravery in the Battle of Coral-Balmoral.
The ceremony also included addresses from Mayor Abb McAlister, Ross Clifford from the Royal Australian Navy, Gundagai High School Captains Halle Smart and Henry Hindmarsh who paid tribute to Richard Norden VC, and Reverend Andrew Kerr from Gundagai Baptist Church who led the ceremony in prayer.
Mayor Abb McAlister said the ceremony was well supported by the community and thanked the RSL Sub-branch for their commitment to recognising and celebrating these events.
“The dawn service had a massive crowd, probably the biggest I have seen, and it was an extremely touching service.”
“The service at the Cenotaph was also well supported by all the schools, local organisations including the SES, Fire brigade, Police, CWA, Red Cross with a lot of people marching for their past relatives and wearing their medals, for those who have served our country,” Abb said.
“Ross Clifford (RAN) was the guest speaker at both the Dawn and the 11am service at the Cenotaph. Attendance at both events was massive, and both services were very touching,” Abb said.
“The Federation Guard and 7th Light Horse both did a fabulous job, the Light Horse had 3 guns fired during the service and it was great,” Abb said, “I would really like to again thank the RSL Sub-branch who do an unbelievable job putting these commemoration ceremonies on, on ANZAC Day and throughout the year on different anniversaries such as Remembrance Day and the Vietnam War, they do a fantastic job,” said Abb.
After the service, the Lions Club held a free community BBQ in Carberry Park on behalf of the Gundagai RSL Sub-branch.
