MAWANG presents Gundagai Woolworths with community artwork

Last week MAWANG Inc gifted Gundagai Woolworths the community artwork that was created at the MAWANG pool party in January. This artwork was proudly presented by committee members (L-R) Bec Russell, Uncle Bill Leigh, Aunty Sonia Piper, Uncle Pete Smith with Bec McPherson. The artwork during production at the MAWANG pool party in January, held at Gundagai Pool.

Last week MAWANG gifted Gundagai Woolworths with a community artwork that was created at the recent community pool party, in recognition and thanks of Woolworth’s support to MAWANG and First Nations people.  Peter Smith, MAWANG President and Public Officer said the creation of a community artwork is something the organisation does every year.

“We do it every year around Australia Day in line with our pool party, we take the canvas down to the event and invite people to put their handprints on or draw the outlines of their hands on to the canvas, to get the community involved.”

“I then touch it up a bit and put my artistic touch on it,” Peter said.

“The artwork is about community coming together, and it’s got the Murrumbidgee river going through it to signify connection,” Peter said.

Peter said Gundagai Woolworths was chosen as the recipient to thank them for their support for MAWANG and to signify their connection to the Gundagai community.

“Woolworths support everything we do but especially the NAIDOC Ball in terms of donating items such as food, snacks, platters or containers for our events.”

There are a few plans in store for MAWANG this year, including the return of their NAIDOC Ball.

“We’ve got a few things in the pipeline for the year like cultural mapping for the area and we are going to be working with the Roads and Maritime Services with their upgrades of the Sheahan Bridge, putting our ideas forward there and coming up with a Wiradjuri name for the bridge,” Peter said.

MAWANG is a group of proud Wiradjuri individuals, showcasing their culture through truth telling.
